Spring Prep On the Farm

It’s been a long winter, but Spring is right around the corner.  You can feel it in the air, the sun shines just a little brighter, and temps are rising.  I love this time of year!  The hope of what’s to come, the excitement that winter is almost over.  It just makes me do a happy dance!

People often refer to this as my “off-time” because I don’t have flowers in the field, but this is actually a very busy time for us here at the farm.

This season is heavy on planning and education. I’m scouring books, taking design and business courses, and mapping out our planting and field schedules for the year.

We are seed-starting as if our lives depend on it!   We use a method called soil blocking for most of our seed-starting.  This method allows us to grow a huge amount of seedlings in a small space.  We start everything inside on shelving racks and under grow lights.

My seed-starting operation has really taken over our house!

We also have the daily task of watering and caring for thousands of seedlings!! We’re moving many out to our greenhouse to harden off before transplanting into the field.

We are prepping our planting beds with a no-till method of layering cardboard and compost.

We start this process a few weeks to months before we plant into it.  The cardboard and compost block out unwanted grass and weeds in our beds.  The cardboard will decompose just enough for us to be able to plant right through it.

We’re planning and prepping for the many things we have planned this coming year!  We’re excited to start offering on-farm workshops, bouquet subscriptions, A la Carte weddings, and DIY Bulk Flower Buckets.

It’s a bustling operation right now, and we’re so excited to share everything with you this season!!
